[4] Ze zijn informeel gedeeld door taxonomists in de dwerg Brachygobius nunus - de soort groep (bv., B. nunus, B. aggregatus, en B. mekongensis) en de grotere Brachygobius doriae -- soort groep (bv., B. doriae, B. sabanus, en B. xanthomelas) [3].

Hommels gobies zijn te vinden in heel Zuid-en Zuidoost-Azië in de eerste plaats in zoetwater-habitats, maar ook in licht brak water. [4] [3]

Eieren worden gestort in een grot waar ze bewaakt worden door de mannelijke [4]. Clutch grootte ligt rond de 150-200 eieren. [5] De eitjes komen na ongeveer zeven dagen en de pootvis er vrij zwemmen nog eens vijf tot zeven dagen later. [ 4]

Onder goede omstandigheden kan het leven in een aquarium voor ongeveer 5 jaar. [4] De meest verkochte soorten in de hobby behoren tot de soorten Brachygobius doriae-groep, maar de kleinere Brachygobius nunus is ook incidenteel verhandeld. [4] [3] Hoewel in veel aquarium boeken gebruiken ze de naam Brachygobius xanthozona, deze soort is zeer zeldzaam in het wild en wordt niet commercieel verhandeld [4].

Brachygobius is a small genus of gobies. They are popular aquarium fish where a number of species are sold as bumblebee gobies because their colours are similar to those of bumblebees.[2]

Bumblebee gobies range in size from 1.5 cm to 4 cm.[3] They are generally coloured black with pale yellow to orange bands.[4] Males are generally slimmer than females and often have more vivid colours, typically orange rather than yellow.[4] Females may also have smaller and rounder heads.[3] When spawning, the colours of the males become deeper, the orange bands becoming red in the case of Brachygobius doriae.[3]
